I wish I'd done this - Henryk Tomaszewski

Henryk Tomaszewski
(10th June 1914 - 11th September 2005)

Tomaszewski was and, even after his death, is one of the most recognised graphic artists and poster designers in the world.
He graduated from Warsaw's School of Graphics as a draughtsman and lithographer. He continued to learn painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw (Poland).

His works were created by the combination of cutting, juxtaposition, addition, removal, drawing and sketching. Always searching for the deeper meaning. Emotion. His typography letters were a world of their own.

He raised two generations of designers at the Poster Studio, Graphics Faculty of the Academy of Fine Arts between the years 1952-85.
His works were presented in countless exhibitions both in Poland and around the world. He was a valued and inspirational character. In 1976 he became a member of the Royal Society of Arts in London and he received a Honorary Royal Designer title.

One of the works of his that I greatly admire is the Love poster from his exhibition at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam in 1991.

There is so much subtext within the piece telling as about the subject of the poster, the character hidding behind it. What possible career, relationship could have this person had?
The use of marks in a specific way bring to mind the popular burlesque girls and their makeup. The use of red both symbolising passion, love, drive but also the dancer's lipsticks corresponding with the black eyeliner and eyelashes so strong in the letter V.

Why do I wish, that I have done this piece?

I would like to have more daring in the task of typography. I want to eventually be able to pass my typography as not just an alphabet to use but also as a visualy appealing works of art that are able to exist without each other.
