Brian Grimwood

In one of the 'It's Nice That' profiles, he was described as the man who changed British illustration.

He is the founder of the CIA – Central Illustration Agency. You can find his website right here and his Instagram profile up here.

Educated at the Bromley Technical School, he studied Art & Design. (A little sneaky info on the side, he was a year below David Bowie, while there.)

His style emerged in 1960's with an expressive visual presence and strong ideas, that make him recognizable. At the beginning of his career, he did mostly magazine covers, sometimes 6 in a week, which at the time was amazing.
For example, his Radio Times covers, which he is proud of were seen by up to 10 million people a week.

Grimwood often plays around with conceptual works, not always retaining the primal version of what it looks like. His inspiration to create came from a memory of the first day in kindergarten when he was three. He said, that his teacher provided him with a small easel and powder paint, which prompted him to paint a clown. That was his turning point. This action stayed with him and directed him throughout the years. When asked, if he had to do it again, would there be anything that he would do differently, he promptly answered 'No.'

His artworks are connected to that memory of childhood and the freedom of the activity, by the loose brush strokes and vibrant blobs of color.

There was a job for the anthology of the Beatles that he really wanted, so he produced a lot of drawings for it, however, he was rejected.

He prefers hands-on work, although recently (2 or 3 years ago), he switched to working on an iPad.

Grimwood said, that he often gets inspired by his previous works and develops them into new ones.
A lot of his work is to do with humor, it is about leaving a trace of memory. Make something more important than it really is or just as much important as it is.

I definitely recommend checking out his website and Instagram profile. Links at the top.
