New tutor - Barney Ibbotson

Today we have met our new tutor, who will be taking over Monday sessions, providing some feedback and professional advice when needed.

Barney Ibbotson is a Manchester based Illustrator and designer. He specialises in pattern, details and colour, with his works being inspired by art-deco and art nouveau. He works in marketing, publishing, branding and advertising, designing murals, album covers, animation and motion graphics, presentation graphics, children's books, icons, logos, leaflets, loyalty cards, flyers, menus, and posters. Ibbotson also exhibits his personal work and collaborates with other artists.

Here are the examples of Barney Ibbotson's works:

Barney talked to us about his experience (17 years of it) as a professional illustrator and designer, as well as some of the works that he did.

He told us that he had temporary jobs to stay afloat and be able to pay the bills. While there he would gain the skills and learn what he would need to know for the future. He saved up money for a professional equipment and developed work from home, gradually moving from painting his works to vector desing in Adobe Illustrator.

By working for a catalogue company he learned to work to a deadline and stop being lazy, however he said that the security of the job, he was there for 18 months, left his work and mind stagnating a bit. Therefore he decided to cut some hours and find work somewhere else.
That's when he decided to collaborate with his friend and start working together as STANLEY&BARNEY, thus he made new contacts, but in the end, he had to make a choice and go off to start working on his own.

Here is an example of collaboration. Ibbotson collaborated with animator Tom Mathieson, for the '10x10' exhibition, which launched the Design Manchester 2014 festival, the theme of which was 'The Science of Imagination'.

Here are some ways in which Barney Ibbotson started his career:

+Networking- mix with new clients,
+Social media- promote yourself,
+Enter exhibitions and competitions- promotion and experience,
+Join a creative recruitment agency- provides you with work,
+Connections- speek and make new contacts and clients,
+New skills- learned to us Illustrator.

I think it will be interesting to learn something from this man.
